If you let your insomnia persist many not-so-good things will happen.


  • Your body's immune system will be compromised. You will tend to get sick faster and stay sick longer.
  • You will develop all sorts of other health issues such as high blood pressure, tension headaches, stomach issues, and many more.
  • You become very irritable and eventually no one wants to be around you.
  • You can suffer from daytime sleepiness and you can't focus on your driving.

You have two options for treating insomnia.

Option one: Use sleep medication

Option two: Use natural methods

Whichever path you choose, this page is provided to discuss both methods for you.

Have you ever wondered if animals suffer from insomnia? I watch my little miniature daschund and she sleeps 16 hours out of the day. That's a lot of sleep. But she doesn't do anything else but play, sleep and eat and more sleep.



Option One: Using sleep medication for treating insomnia


There are sleep drugs you can use such as Lunesta, Sonata, Ambien and Tylenol Pm. Or you might want to try muscle relaxers such as amitryptiline (in small doses), Soma, Flexeril, or Valium.

Pros: Sleep medications act fast and quickly. Since it works on a chemical level normally you are asleep within 30 minutes of taking the drug. However, that time varies with each person.

Cons: You need to set aside enough time for sleep (at least 8 hours). I had to set aside 12 hours to ensure that I wasn't drowsy during the day. I tried some Tylenol Pm and 12 hours of sleep wasn't enough to keep me from feeling drowsy the next day.

You can become dependent on the drug. Dependency also means you have to keep shelling out money to keep your habit. This can cost from $30-$100 a month or more. There are side effects to consider as well. Since drugs work on a chemical level, your body will have chemical waste in your system and it takes a few days to get rid of the waste. Chemical waste in your body can affect other cells leading to health issues further down the road.

You don't solve the actual underlying problem of why you aren't sleeping. You are only treating a symptom.

Option Two: Using natural sleep methods for treating insomnia


Treating insomnia naturally allows you to focus on your actual problem. You have to figure out why you aren't sleeping, whether it's your environment or because of stress you are forced to look at your lifestyle and change it.

Pros: There are no side effects from medication (cause you aren't using any). You address the actual problem and not the symptom. You achieve sleep without dependency on drugs. It saves you money. Health issues related to sleep are limited.

Cons: Natural methods takes longer to achieve desire sleep. Can be a trial and error method before you find what works for you.
